Paeonia emodi is a remarkable member of the peony family. It’s a captivating herbaceous perennial, renowned for its exquisite beauty—and in some cultures, for the medicinal properties of its rhizomes. A hardy, clump-forming herbaceous perennial, it grows to around 80-100cm in height. It has attractive, dark green, glossy, divided leaves. In late spring, the tall stems carry fragrant, white flowers with prominent golden-yellow centres. Each flower is 8-12cm across.Â
This beautiful peony would look amazing in a garden filled with white and silver plants. To perform at its best, plant it in a spot that receives full sun or dappled shade. Any soil will do, providing it does not flood in winter. Incidentally, when planting peonies, make sure that you do not plant them too deeply, as this will inhibit their flowering.Â
Commonly known as the Himalayan peony, Paeonia emodi is native to Asia. And it is so highly regarded, that the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has awarded it the coveted Award of Garden Merit.
